On Monday we had long day with travelling through
some F-roads to remote sites of Kverkfjöll (ice cave) and
Askja.
The North east part of Iceland is perhaps the
most isolate and rough part of the country. Kilometers and kilometers of lava
rocks in different colors and shapes plus some mountains. Vatnajökull looms
in the distance. A lone Kuplero is wondering what he is doing there and how he
can dive
here.
More
lava and strange
mountains.
The
F-roads in Iceland have lots of river crossings. We found out that our vehicle
leaked through it's left rear
door...
Finally
we arrived to Kverkfjöll and the famous Ice cave where hot water from the
deep earth meets the ice of
Vatnajökull.
After
Kverkfjöll we went to nearby Askja - A big crater filled with water. The
smaller water in the front has warm blue water coming from the deep. Like most
Icelandic sights, the entrance to to the site is arranged in clever way: parking
space is good 20-30 minutes walk away and the breath taking view is revealed
only after the final steps. This way the tourist will be set into suitable
mindset before seeing the site and has some time to let it sink before driving
away.
