Faroe Islands

We spent three days on the Faroe Islands while Norröna was visiting Denmark. We arrived in the middle of the Faroese national day festivals and found out that there are some serious partying going on in the small remote islands. We also managed to do some more diving and sight seeing.

We arrived to Torshavn very early in the morning and some partying was still going on in the harbour. Torshavn is the capital of the Faroe Islands and has some 18000 residents.

We could not check in to our Hostel before 2 pm so we did some sight seeing on the islands of Streymoy and Eysturoy. The landscape in Faroe islands is quite dramatic.

Lambs are plenty in Faroe islands, too and they wander everywhere and especially seems to like the roads so one must drive carefully there.

When the evening came we headed to the town for pizza and some beers. Cafe Natur is popular bar in the harbour and was full of people in the early evening. We asked for other popular places and were told to go to Club Kaggin. Outside it does not look much like a club and indeed it looked first less than impressive as it was still early night and the club was mostly empty and the place was quite shoddy. After some time we heard live music downstairs and went there. There was a first class club room and excellent live band playing Beatles to empty room! In the small hours the club started getting crowded and the band played on.

The next day we went to Vestmanna for bird cliffs tour. The cliffs are 600 meters high and there are some over 100 meters high lone peaks raising from the water. The pictures cannot really show how majestic the cliffs are. If you can see a small boat in the next picture then you may get some idea of the place. It was late summer so nesting was over and some birds were already starting their move to south.

Coming back to town in Saturday evening we met some local divers and got some information about shore diving possibilities. On Sunday we headed to the northern town of Gjogv for canyon diving. We had to do some serious stair climbing to get our diving equipment down and especially up!

The town of Gjogv.

The second dive was in the town of Oyndarfjordur nearby. The Faroe waters offers good diving and it would be nice to come back some day for more diving.

However our time in Faroe islands came to the end and we departed the islands on Monday morning. We seem to have a good karma with us because the weather was again very nice (in the Faroe standards) during our stay but returned to the normal in Monday morning.. Farewell Faroe - I hope to come over there again some day!
